Dr. Rebecca Knuth is the recipient of the 2009 Library Journal Teaching Award! The award comes with $5000 from ProQuest, which sponsors the award, along with an article in LJ (in the November 15 issue) and a party at Midwinter ALA in Boston. We all know how important your work is, how students in the LIS Program value your perspective, mentoring, and how you bring your research into the classroom. It is wonderful to have national recognition for your work with students.

The event features a special talk, “Silencing Books: The Suppression of Ideas and FREADOM”, by Dr. Rebecca Knuth, Professor of Library and Information Science at University of Hawaii at Manoa, recipient of the Sarah Vann Intellectual Freedom Award, and author of Libricide: The Regime-Sponsored Destruction of Books and Libraries in the Twentieth Century, and Burning Books and Leveling Libraries: Extremist Violence and Cultural Destruction.

In addition, there will be a hunt, music, dancing, and other activities. Attend in costume representing a banned/challenged book or author if you like; but this is not required. Free costumes available on site.  Have your photo taken and win prizes for best costume: 1000$L for 1st, 500$L for 2nd, and 250$L for 3rd.

The UH Manoa LISc Program will be participating in the cooperative reunion on Sunday, July 12 2009, 5.30 pm – 7.30 pm at the Westin River North, 320 N. Dearborn St., Grand Ballroom, Chicago, IL.  The LISc program has paid for a table and Manoa alumni are encouraged to congregate!

The ALA Committee on Accreditation (COA) granted the UH Manoa LISc program the full six-year accreditation. As you may know, this is the maximum recognition that COA can give, showing a school meets standards and is engaged in strategic planning and assessment.

We’re proud and excited, but mostly we wanted to thank you for all that you do for the LIS Program. We know that many of you hire our grads, offer internships or practica, teach as adjuncts, come as guest speakers, help our LIS Alumni Group through service or donations, fill out our surveys, send us good applicants, come to alumni gatherings, mentor students, send us postcards or online updates… and so much more.

Joseph MURPHY (2006) has been identified as a 2009 Library Journal Mover & Shaker. Movers & Shakers was launched in 2002 to identify professionals in the library world who are ’shaping the future of libraries.’

Murphy was identified by LJ as a Trendspotter, for his work in best practices in Web 2.0 technologies. He recently brought iPhone-based mobile reference to Yale University’s Kline Science Library, with acclaim. Joe is Science Librarian, Coordinator of Instruction & Technology. Congratulations to Joe!

The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s graduate programs at the Shidler College of Business and in Library and Information Science are recognized among the best in the nation, in U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools 2010.”

UH Mānoa’s Library and Information Science (LIS) program is ranked by its peers 29th out of 50 accredited programs nationwide.  The program’s School Library Media Specialization is among the nation’s top 10 for the third year in a row, placing 8^th nationally.

“We are deeply pleased to once again receive this recognition from our peers. This is terrific testimony to both the LIS faculty, who have built a rigorous and nationally respected graduate curriculum, and to the LIS students, who are emerging leaders in the school library field,” said Violet H. Harada, Professor and Associate Program Chair of the Library and Information Science Program.

Established in 1965, the LIS program promotes international scholarship and instruction, as well as fostering emerging information technologies. It is the only professional school that is part of UH Mānoa’s Department of Information and Computer Sciences.

There’s going to be a number of librarians from Hawaii heading to
Seattle on Wednesday afternoon — Junie Hayashi, Sharon Lepage, Margot
Hanson, Becky Rathgeber and yours truly just to name a few. Since we’re
all on the same flight (we get into Seattle around 10:30pm), it occurred
to me that there must be other UH LIS alumni going to ACRL (hey Joe
Murphy, that means you!). I also heard rumors that Leslie Wood and Uta
Hussong are going to be in Seattle.

So, if anyone’s interested in getting together, perhaps on Friday night
for dinner or just for drinks and pupu, give me a call or email me. My
