Apologies if you have already been bombarded by messages about this issue. The U.S. Census Bureau has proposed to eliminate the Statistical Compendia Branch, which produces the Statistical Abstract of the United States, the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, and the County and City Data Book, among other titles. Although some people have claimed that the information in the Statistical Abstract is all available elsewhere, not all of the data is available for free online, nor is it all easy to find and access.
If you appreciate the Statistical Abstract and its relatives, please consider writing to your representatives in Congress to urge them to preserve funding for the Statistical Compendia Branch of the Census Bureau. A sample letter with talking points is available here: http://freegovinfo.info/node/3219. We are told that letters carry more weight than emails or phone calls.
Thanks,
GwenGwen Sinclair
